Pôvod, botanika a druhy
Goji, also known as Chinese wolfberry (Lycium barbarum), belongs among the fruit species that became famous in Europe very quickly, mainly thanks to the marketing of “superfoods”. However, this enthusiasm is not based on advertising alone. It is a genuinely interesting, resilient and useful woody plant that combines value for food production, cultivation and landscape use.
Chinese wolfberry (Lycium barbarum) is a deciduous, fast-growing shrub with long, arching, overhanging shoots. Under good conditions, it grows to approximately 1.5 to 3 m; with weak pruning, it can form broad, tangled stands. Related species or hybrid types, especially Lycium chinense, may also appear in cultivar assortments. The flowers are small, purple to pinkish-purple, bisexual and form during summer on young shoots. The fruits are elongated berries, usually orange-red to bright red, approximately 1 to 2 cm long, and even larger in large-fruited cultivars.
Prečo je goji označované ako superpotravina
Vďaka vysokému obsahu antioxidantov, vitamínu C, B, železa a aminokyselín patria medzi tzv. superpotraviny. Modern research now shows that the quality of goji berries depends not only on the cultivar, but also on ripeness, harvest date, water regime, nutrition, pruning, plant health and drying method. Modern assessments of goji confirm its high content of bioactive compounds, especially polysaccharides, carotenoids, phenolic compounds and other secondary metabolites, but they also point out that fruit quality is highly variable.

Pestovanie - stanovište a pôda
Kustovnica čínska obľubuje slnečné a teplé stanoviská, chránené pred vetrom. Goji needs full sun above all in order to produce quality fruit. It will grow in partial shade, but it flowers less, the berries ripen less well, they are more acidic and the stand is more prone to diseases. The best results are achieved in a warm, airy and sunny location where leaves dry quickly after rain. According to cultivation recommendations for Lycium barbarum, goji grows best in sandy loam to loamy, well-drained soils.
Goji does not like permanently waterlogged soils. Grower’s note: Goji tolerates drought better than many soft berry crops, but high fruit quality does not arise from stress.
Výsadba a sadenice
Kvalitná sadenica by mala byť zakorenená v črepníku a mať pevné, zelené výhonky. Goji can be planted in spring or autumn. In colder regions, spring planting is safer so that the plant has time to root well before winter. The planting hole should be slightly larger than the root ball. Po výsadbe sledujte vlhkosť pôdy. Mladá rastlina sa potrebuje zakoreniť, preto ju nenechajte dlho preschnúť.
Goji can also be grown in a container, but the pot must be large, deep and well drained. In plantations, planting density is chosen according to the training system and harvest method. Traditional recommendations indicate approximately 6,000 to 6,500 plants per hectare at a spacing of 100 to 150 cm within the row.
Vedenie rastliny, tvarovanie a rez
Bez rezania goji vytvára dlhé, prevesené a zamotané výhony. Správny rez je kľúčom k bohatej úrode. After planting, it is advisable to first create the basic shape. Young shoots are tied to a support and the strongest shoots are selected to form the framework of the plant. Lateral shoots are shortened to encourage branching and the formation of fruiting wood. Pruning rule: Goji needs light inside the shrub. The berries should not ripen in a dense mass of leaves.

In Asia, a form with one main trunk and overhanging fruiting shoots is often used. The plant is trained to a stake or pole and the crown is maintained by pruning so that it does not become too dense. Modified version of goji training and pruning with one main trunk and two tiers, used in the Ningxia region for the cultivar Ningqi No. In commercial cultivation, a wire support system similar to a simple fruit espalier is practical. Shoots are tied to the support, the stand is maintained as a narrow wall and the inter-row area remains accessible.
Older recommendations often listed commercial cultivars such as Big Lifeberry, Sweet Lifeberry or No. 1 Lifeberry. Recent research shows that differences between cultivars are significant not only in fruit size and shape, but also in physicochemical, bioactive and aromatic properties. For the home garden, it makes sense to choose earlier cultivars with large berries and a pleasant flavour. Cultivars with higher dry matter, even ripening and firmer fruit are suitable for drying.
Zber, spracovanie a použitie plodov
Goji ripens gradually, so harvesting is often repeated over several weeks. The earliest berries may appear in August, but the highest-quality fruit often develops only during stable warm weather in late summer and early autumn. Hand harvesting is gentle but time-consuming. The berries are soft and easily damaged if picked carelessly. On larger areas, mechanised harvesting can be considered, but it requires a suitable training system, even ripening and cultivars that tolerate handling.
Goji is most commonly sold as dried fruit. Drying extends shelf life, reduces weight and concentrates both flavour and nutrients. Traditional sun drying is simple, but it depends on weather and hygienic conditions. Modern processing uses controlled temperatures, better hygiene and moisture control. For a small grower, however, the three most practical forms are fresh berries for direct consumption, gently dried berries and frozen fruit.
Výživa, závlaha a agrotechnika
Goji is often described as an undemanding plant. This is only partly true. It can survive even in poorer soils, but a productive planting with high-quality fruit requires balanced nutrition and water management. Findings from drip fertigation - drip irrigation with dissolved nutrients - are particularly interesting. A two-year study from Ningxia showed that drip fertigation can improve soil organic carbon, nutrient use efficiency and goji yield compared with traditional broadcast fertilisation.

In garden cultivation, it is sufficient to incorporate compost or a high-quality horticultural substrate into the planting hole before planting and then maintain soil life with mulch, compost and appropriate irrigation. Nitrogen supports shoot growth, but excessive nitrogen can lead to vigorous, soft growth, poorer light penetration and higher disease pressure. Pri hnojení postupujte striedmo; príliš bujný rast nemusí znamenať lepšiu úrodu.
Choroby, škodcovia a ochrana
The most important disease is powdery mildew, which mainly attacks young leaves and shoots, reduces photosynthesis, weakens the plant and may negatively affect both yield and fruit quality. In Europe, it is also necessary to monitor the goji gall mite, Aceria kuko. This Asian pest has also been recorded in the Czech Republic on Lycium chinense and Lycium barbarum. It causes galls, deformations and reduced plant vitality on leaves. In some European regions, stink bugs and other pests are also mentioned.
Product cleanliness is extremely important in goji because the berries are often consumed dried and in concentrated form. Research warns that pesticide residues can be a problem in intensive cultivation and with inappropriate plant protection. Pan et al. (2024) analysed dried goji berries from Chinese markets and detected the presence of several pesticide residues. The simplest rule: The best protection for goji is prevention: a sunny site, airy pruning, appropriate irrigation, no over-fertilisation with nitrogen, healthy planting material and regular leaf inspection.
Ekonomika a použitie v záhrade
Goji je nenáročná, dlhoveká a vysoko úžitková rastlina, ktorú ocení každý záhradkár. Few fruit species have experienced such a rapid rise in popularity in Europe as goji. For many years, it was presented as a “happy fruit”, a “fruit of longevity” or a “superfruit”. Such labels helped attract customer attention, but the reality of cultivation is more practical. It is suitable for home gardens as well as commercial plantings, but only if it is grown with a clear goal.
Kustovnice čínská - GOJI
For home gardeners, goji is an attractive plant if they have a sunny site, support structure and regular pruning. For professional growers, it is a crop with potential, but also with risks: a high need for manual labour, gradual harvesting, sensitivity to drying quality, leaf diseases and the need for cultivars suitable for plantation cultivation. Locally grown goji from controlled plantings, with low chemical load and gentle drying, may have very good market value.

Important note: Goji is an important fruit-bearing plant and food, but health claims about it should be formulated with caution. The most important goal is to obtain clean, ripe and high-quality berries without excessive residues of pesticides and heavy metals.
